Ed Zitron is providing his assessment and prognosis strictly on financial basis. But AI has national security and geopolitical dimensions as well. US government is fully committed to keep the AI lead for as long as possible. And they use all sorts of tricks to affect the market in AI's favor. Financial analysis alone is not enough. The government will do anything to prevent AI bubble from bursting.
long gone in the sense of media coverage perhaps? the virus hasn't gone anywhere and it's not like we have vaccines that give permanent/longterm immunity
Measles has a vaccine, ebola isn't found in the wild in the West. The chances of catching either from a random person at a meetup are basically zero.
It is no longer a pandemic which is killing tens of thousands of people, but covid is very much still around, and there's no true long-term vaccine for it. A lot of people with it are going to be more-or-less asymptomatic.
However, for a small bunch of immunocompromised people it is still very much life-altering or even deadly. For them catching it is just Not An Option, so if you want them at a large-scale meetup like this you'll have to ask all attendants to make the offer of spending a few seconds taking the $2 test.
The list of companies that signed this letter is telling (including Nvidia, Meta, Microsoft). Equally telling is the list of companies that did not sign it -- including Google, Amazon.
> Could you elaborate? I don't understand your implication. Amazon in particular hosts open weight models via Amazon Bedrock (e.g. Ministral 14B 3.0, DeepSeek V3.2, ...)
It means Google and Amazon do not care and would not voice their opposition against the government action.
There are some arguments to stick with "half-way" time -- 30 minutes in the middle between standard and summer time. It does not necessarily solves all the problems but makes a reasonable compromise with farmers who want standard time and many others who prefer summer time.
