Wow... I understand your point but if you feel that strong about gates using js on his personal website, it is a bit harsh isn't it? Could have multiple reasons why it is needed. Especially for someone with such a huge follower base. Lazy loading, tracking, client based adjustments, using a framework, fun [:)]... I could go on with a 100 more points why js might be needed.

I know that this is sarcasm, but there are people who really think this.

They get emotional (usually angry) when you tell them you disable javascript- as if every site that serves any kind of content has an automatic entitlement to run arbitrary code on your computer.

HTML has lazy loading.

There not a lot of reason to not have at least a fallback to serve your text-only content without JS.

That is true, but it is very basic and depending on the browser how it is implemented. On traffic heavy sites, which I assume gates blog is, js gives you full control over what get loaded when and at the same time enables tracking how far the user read the article and which parts he most likely skipped. I am not saying that this is good, however if you have these requirements js is a valid choice.

Basically no one has a requirement to track what someone else is looking at. In fact, if not given explicit consent by the person being tracked (like they've specifically sought you tracking it for them, e.g. marking their place), we should frankly criminalize it. Mass surveillance should result in jail time.

I don't think there's any valid reason to _require_ JS on a static web site unless interactivity is the whole point.

They did with some services. Not sure if there is a list. For one I am missing phone mirroring to my mac which they disabled because they do not want to give api access.

Just my 2 cents. Nuclear was dead in Germany without political influence. The reactors where so old, that upgrading them to modern standard would have been a waste of money compared to renewables. France only works because the state helps out. UKs new reactors are financial suicide.

Everything else you might have a point. The EU behaves as if it has influence over companies abroad. Then its strategy might work and do some good. Sadly this is not the case. Instead we are getting isolated and loosing the AI battle bad while bureaucracy and regulations forces inventors to leave.

Depends how you set it up. Like any other project I guess. Funny enough, if you are able to produce maintainable code with an llm you could aswell lead a team of humans. LLMs shift your focus on project management and architectural choices.

I let the llm write components which are independent to each other. This works great and keeps everything clean. The times that llm would only generate unmaintainable code are long gone with OPUS, Fable and sol 5.6

> LLMs shift your focus on project management and architectural choices.

And a comfortable sense of short term productivity that make you tend to ignore the middle and long-term trade-offs.

It is unmaintainable unless you create a very modular architecture (read here: modules written by LLMs that will not get in the middle of others bc of their extra fat).

And even with a modular architecture, I am not convinced.

However I had a couple of success stories in the generative area, maybe bc I am so stupid that I do not detect the problems: SQL query/code generation and frontend Alpine.js-based for a small website.

Also good for one-off scripts.

But when it is about a project where you iterate for weeks, things get out of hand.

As a powerful search engine, exploring alternative solutions or doing code review, great. But the reason is not that it is extremely good at it. It is bc it is extremely fast at it and it is easy to recognize bogus stuff if you have been doing this for many years, so it saves you time. But still gives you inaccurate stuff.

I think it is fitting because they provide „all“ models independent from the provider. Open in this sense means to me being open to switch the model, speed and provider at any time.

What would be the attack vector with indirect access to a webcam?

De-anonymisation for one.

But more generally, if I’m the sort of person who would allow this I’d probably allow some other stupid permissions if they promised me something novel on the other side.

Maybe try hiding your face below the camera and throwing your hands up in the sky so the camera only sees your hands then play/sing Metallica.

   [Chorus]
Never cared for what they do
Never cared for what they know
   But I know

   [Refrain]
So close, no matter how far
It couldn't be much more from the heart
   Forever trusting who we are
   And nothing else matters

The general tendency among people is to go along with what's thrown to them, in a Symphony of Destruction, Megadeath

    [Refrain]
    You take a mortal man
    And put him in control
    Watch him become a God
    Watch people's heads a-roll

    A-roll
    A-roll

    [Chorus]
    Just like the Pied Piper
    Led rats through the streets
    We dance like marionettes
Swaying to the symphony of destruction

Well then be careful of US/UK spelling!

I'd love if the people who put a tape over their laptop webcam could answer this.

I'd love if people stopped trying to pretend Snowden didn't happen.

It's very comforting to think that somewhere deep within the NSA is a person whose job it is to watch my face while I poop.

That's hilarious side by side with stories about cops abusing surveillance to stalk their ex, and women generally.

So you don't fear being victimised and don't plan to ever stand up for those who do. Not very unique, I'd say that's the primordial slime we all come from... but why stay in it?

> So you don't fear being victimised and don't plan to ever stand up for those who do.

Is that so? Can you show me what it was, exactly, that lead you to this determination?

Why, are you denying it?

Yes.

I further demand that you either put up or shut up, accusator.

Your reaction to mentioning concerns about mass surveillance was to make a fucking joke about you pooping. That joke's on you, says only something about you, as does how you're trying to turn this into me doing you this awesome injustice by... reading what you wrote and connecting the dots. You couldn't hold in the smirk, you can't take the smirk having been seen. Both are your problem.

I see.

>>>>> It's very comforting to think that somewhere deep within the NSA is a person whose job it is to watch my face while I poop.

I made what was clearly a fucking joke about me, myself, pooping, as you now admit.

>>> So you don't fear being victimised and don't plan to ever stand up for those who do.

You turned that fucking joke into a beliefs system.

>>> That's hilarious side by side with stories about cops abusing surveillance to stalk their ex, and women generally.

A beliefs system specifically about women, no less.

>> Why, are you denying it?

You requested that I defend the beliefs system that you invented.

From all of this, I can only surmise that you are literally insane.

Do not contact me again about this or any other matter. Your harassment is both unwanted, and unwarranted. There is nothing further here to discuss.

If you have any concerns, please email them to hn@ycombinator.com

Never poop alone

To me, a stranger gaining access to my webcam to secretly watch me isn't just an "attack vector"...

You are giving your face away, for one very obvious point.

Never give a random website access to your webcam. This is basic privacy 101.

Well they have your IP....and browser fingerprints....rough time of day if a window, direction, weather....products you bought....your age...possibly health issues that come up....essentially any information that can be used to schedule and stalk you...

The funny air theremin site knows my health issues and products I bought?

Yeah. It certainly can.... Obviously if you have any products that are imaged online then they can be extrqcted and reverse searched to see what you bought, and get an idea of your wealth, status, and area if you have specific regional goods.... they can also see if you have physical tics say, or you may have medical equipment or medicine, or coufh syrup...or you may be an amputee, or in a wheel chair....yes...

I can potentially know if you're home or not and then rob the fuck out of you or kidnap your family members, for one.

I’m home right now but I’ll let you know when I go out.

Palmprint?

Exactly, I have the luxury to be able to use all top tier models without limitation. Fable and OPUS most definitely say that you are wrong and try to proove it most of the time with links to sources or math. I even had an argument with Fable where I was 100% sure it was wrong and tried to explain the issue. Turns out I was wrong. Fable did NOT give an inch. Always said, you are wrong, let me try to explain it like this. It even made a graphic when I did not get it. The times of LLMs only saying yes is over since 3-6 months. Where it still lags are decisions for infrastructure. It makes a plan. I say "Why not this?" and it responds with "that is much better" in 90% of the cases. However, I am not sure how to solve this. I also do not want an LLM to say: "I wont implement this."

I made a benchmark for handwriting recognition for a project while keeping line breaks and errors (grammar, spelling). Sonnet absolutely dominates it since a good half a year. 5.6 did not change that for me. This should also translate to better ocr.

You're the second person to mention handwriting. I think it might be handwriting-specific; perhaps Anthropic has a better corpus for this.

I really wouldn't know, though. Anthropic models barf out copyright issues for my use case, so I'm unable even to benchmark them. It's a common problem when you're scanning public domain books. Mine are reference texts often cited.

Ah okay. Ofc handwriting is not copyrighted. Makes sense, that we do not have these issues.

Thank you! I find it somewhat ignorant to say, most people do not understand the reason behind a peer review, while obviously being missinformed. To even believe that it only serves a single purpose somewhat tells me, that the author is missing experiences with other teams / people.

> To even believe that it only serves a single purpose

There are a lot of people who incepted the word "single" into this post in order to have something worthless to argue about. Even with "primary" as the second word of the headline.

You are right. Let me rephrase and my argument still stands: „To even believe there is a primary purpose…“

Not sure if you mean something else, but the model itself is not able to send anything.
