What is it called when there's a process that's available to individuals but is long and onerous and cannot be shared among them? Saying the binaries are open source now means that the work of reverse engineering will be repeated exactly in proportion to the number of times it's modified. I would argue on a large scale this is still effectively closed source.
I'm not a lawyer. But I think if your "binary patch" is a series of instructions to write specific code to specific locations in a binary file, and the patch itself doesn't include any of the code present in the original binary, making/distributing a binary patch can't possibly be copyright infringement.
It's normal in the videogame ROM hacking community to distribute this kind of binary patches (known as IPS patches) so as to avoid legal trouble, since the binary patch is useless if the user doesn't have access to the original videogame ROM. Distributing the ROM or even its patched version would be illegal, but a patch of the kind I mentioned is fine.
I would move the quotes to "open" since the issue of licensing is still left. Although LLM providers have shown that they don't care about copyright so it should go both ways.
I bought 4 of the same tablet (Fire HD 10) on Black Friday 2021 for Home Assistant dashboards and a Fire HD 10 Pro (edit: actually Plus) I use as an E-reader/browser (with KOReader/Firefox). To save money I got the cheaper version with lockscreen ads pre-installed but before ever letting them online I ran Fire Toolbox to remove the ads, debloat, block updating and install Google services. I've never had the problems OP describes but my tablets all came with FireOS v7.3.2.1 and I've never let them update. I think Amazon started locking down later firmware versions more but Fire Toolbox can still do quite a bit to tame and decruft later versions. The XDA forum for Fire Toolbox has a lot of posts covering exploits and workarounds for later FireOS versions.
Once the Amazon cruft is tamed, I still haven't found a meaningfully better 10-inch thin/light Android tablet than the 2021 Fire HD 10 Pro. It has wireless charging, weighs 430g and at 247 x 166 x 9.2 mm no one makes a 10" that's much lighter, smaller or thinner. The only slight downside is FireOS 7 is based on Android 9 and new versions of a few apps are starting to require later APIs. I'd gladly pay ~$250 for a 10" Android 16 tablet with wireless charging that was as thin & light but had smaller bezels for overall smaller size.

It is shocking that no mainstream tablet manufacturer will let buyers exercise control over their device. At the very least, this means having root and being able to use it to purge unwanted software. Ideally, it also means being able to fully replace the stock OS with third party/open firmware.

Yes, you're correct (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08F6FYN6B). Wireless charging and 4gb RAM vs 3gb. I think the 2021 Fire HD 10 Plus may have been the only ~10-inch tablet ever with Qi charging.
For a thin & light e-reader/browser it's really perfect because it sits on the cradle on my nightstand always charged and ready to go. The display size feels like a hardback page. Now that it's been rooted, I'm really hoping for Lineage OS.

I would very much like that, but do we have a solution to the locked bootloader? My recollection is that on previous fire tablets, the only way to get a custom rom was to do an ugly hack that still uses the stock kernel because that's the only thing that's signed in a way the bootloader will run. Which is still something but it's a big caveat.
They've managed to unlock the bootloader on Fire tablets up until 2019
so just guessing give them a year, lol

This is pretty standard AI writing cadence/style. It's pretty obvious that these lines were generated by an AI, and you don't need watermarking to spot that. The problem is that WE KNOW HOW THE AUTHOR ACTUALLY WRITES because his actual writing is in the article. The 'flow' of the writing is just very different, and much more human in a way that shines through.

This seems excessive, the author outright admits that LLMs were used, but some of your critiques can just as well be explained by a lack of familiarity with certain expressions or terminology.
For example, (software/e) fuses are a common thing spoken about in the context of Android custom roms and rooting, typically re rollbacks. The term is used as such in the XDA thread the article links to in the same paragraph.
"not getting the memo" and "something being the best television in years" are also two very common expressions. Both are used beyond literal notes or TV.
This blunt bashing of phrases makes me (and surely others) not want to share thoughts on the internet. Because apparently trying to not sound like a textbook, or in some cases even trying to write proper English, gets you labeled as LLM.

No, its AI. But your standard of required proof cannot be met. You can always point to any particular example and say, oh a human could say that. Yes, one odd phrasing could be attributed to that. Multiple per paragraph, and it's no longer a viable explanation. How much LLM text do you actually consume on the daily?
You need to take it as a whole. Sometimes there are obvious tells like certain phrases, but some devs think they can be clever by telling their bots to avoid those phrases using "humanizer" skills. It doesn't work though, because LLM writing has an uncanny valley quality to it that people just find offputting.
I have seen phrases with "earns its keep" a lot when comparing different algorithms and tradeoffs.

AI comments are against the rules and I think the commenter's lack of an explanation for their choice of words sufficiently establishes it wasn't their words to begin with.

Those are wild headings that read like an op-ed on a site covered in ads. I've said some of those things irl, and "relief pitcher" is a thing, and in solution those phrases are fine. As section headings it's wild imo
The point is not that no one says these IRL, the point is that LLMs always tend to fall back on this kind of verbiage - they got it from us, they aren’t doing anything new or special, they’re just predisposed towards a very particular kind of voice / word choice in prose.
I also had the feeling that it's AI written but not everything appeared that way. I checked it with Pangram and GPTZero and both returned with a verdict of a mix of AI and human writing. Pangram thinks it is about 50-50.

I'm really hate reading AI when no real information is added, but when it takes you step by step to understand, it's my best tool so far to really understand things.

Part of it is bit natural too, a human authored content has its own asymmetries to keep it interesting. LLM generated content is way too verbose and kind of lacks that factor.
Nevertheless, it was interesting experiment, also a bit dangerous reality how people are using LLMs. Just flip the context from user trying to root their own device to some one else's device.
Blogs like the one that is linked are almost entirely an entertainment medium disguised as an informational learning lesson. We already know LLMs are pretty good at security exploits, just like we already know they are pretty good at writing typical code.
Because it is an entertainment medium, the voice of the messenger is the only thing that matters and every current LLM has a boring, annoying voice. If you aren't telling us something new you better be telling us something in an entertaining fashion.

Yes, they used ai, but this is what ai SHOULD be used for. AI should be used for either very small projects that nobody wants to do or very extreme missions that could take months.

I often really want to read articles, but the minute is encounter claude-speak, I (a) either leave (90%+ of the time) or (b) ask another AI to rewrite it using simple english or in a style of another writer in that space (yes, I know, it's ironical).

The load bearing fact is it's not the content, or the originality, or the perceived lack of effort, it's reading the same trope for the 10000th time, and experiencing something akin to ad-blindness.
Taste is subjective of course, but when 80% (or whatever) of your potential audience dislikes something perhaps you should just accept that it's a bad idea.
Thing is, using ML they can make more than 5 times as many articles. And I suspect those who don't object to wasting more time on an article because it was produced in a protracted way probably clock through on ads more. So annoying 80% of people might still get them more revenue in the end.

Yep, I bought a Brother printer+scanner a few days ago. Their Linux driver is a mess of perl+binary blobs with a completely bizarre architecture where one blob constantly rewrites some pointless config file just so that other binary blob can read it during the same print job. Of course no ARM support. Scanner driver was also a massive blob doing almost nothing but some simple USB communication.
I had it re-written into a nice cups C filter driver, verified against original to produce identical output, easy to install and manage on my Orange Pi boards to serve as a network printer server for this USB only printer, before the printer even arrived.
The same with the scanner driver. Instead of taking a `sane` route, I just had LLM write a small dependency-less Linux C program to get the scans with nice CLI UX on top, fit for my needs.
Everyhting about 10x simpler than the manufacturer code, yet still fully featured.
Had some time so I asked for NEON+AVX2 optimizations. Got them too, so the filter is 5x faster than the original. :D
I understand why “prompt kiddie” feels accurate, but I don’t think it is. Expertise is _amplified_ with LLM agents. The same $300 of tokens given to my plumber—who is an _excellent_ plumber—is unlikely to produce the same outcome.
A friend of mine who has at most written some SQL joins recently bought a cheap thermal printer on Amazon. The printer was meant to be used with a heavily ad and microstransaction laden app to operate over Bluetooth. He was able to use codex to hook it up to his MacBook and reverse engineer the printer then make a web service so he can print whatever he wants from anywhere.
I agree with you in that I now feel like a 100x engineer, but I think it would have taken me a long time to figure that one out pre AI.
There's a lot of people who know Excel and SQL who otherwise don't know anything else technical. By my measure what they do is programming but a lot of people don't see it that way.
He's picked up the AI stuff really well. I've helped him along but he has an openclaw setup he uses for most things. Has gotten it to deploy sites to railway and fly.io. I am impressed for sure. I think he just has a lot of creativity and is excited about what he can do now so he's willing to learn.

There is something amazing about letting the computer work at something tirelessly until it gets to a working solution.
I’m also amazed at how often I can speed up the process by reviewing progress, inserting my knowledge, stopping it from pursuing dead ends, and redirecting effort. Something that the LLM might have finished in 2 hours can be done in 20 minutes with me paying close attention and intervening.
When agents are working for 8 hours, the prompt matters a lot less. At that point you're basically just writing "Root this tablet connected via USB cable" and the prompt doesn't really matter much.
The only human-written part of the prompt was "Explain to me in more simple terms the following". The rest of the prompt came from asking Kimi K3 for a handoff summary.
At least in the write up he talked about trying with 3 different models. He could look at the progress at each step and evaluate whether it was making progress or stuck. He was able to understand the partial and complete solutions.
I think part of what it shows is how much a good value function provides in a search problem. But we’ve always known that brute force is also a valid solution to search problems. It seems that what’s changed is that it’s much easier than before to run brute force, so it’s going to be applied more often and by a base rate argument “solve” more problems. What remains to be seen is whether human + new tech = better than the parts, as has been the case with most previous new technologies.
The better the models are the less this is true. If the prompt history is smth like “goal: root this tablet” and it did all on its own - then you plumber can 100% achieve same result in same amount of time.
The GP poster is someone who is familiar with the problems caused by AI writing code. For example: reimplementing major functionality because the AI isn’t aware of it (somehow). There are many tasks that domain-specific knowledge is required to successfully guide the AI.

I don't think the word "amplification" is accurate. I don't know why, but while engineering techbro circles love "multipliers," but those very very rarely exist in real life.
You do need a baseline of knowledge to be able to prompt the AI in a domain successfully. But beyond that baseline there are rapidly diminishing returns. Someone with skill far beyond a certain line won't get amplified the same way someone who just clears that line will.

okay. where is the source code? the writeup (HANDOFF link at the end) looks decent at the first glance, and it's much more easy to rebuild an exploit from a writeup than without it, but I don't feel like hunting down a tablet with your exact Fire OS version, importing U.S. hardware into Ukraine, paying all the levies, shipment costs, etc. only to get my hands on the hardware and hack it myself to see if your exploit works. this entire thing too easily could be moot.
in tangential defense, I can only say that Gemini 2.5 Flash-Lite was enough for me to set older Dishonored: DotO builds free of Denuvo yet it had much harder time with DEATHLOOP, so I don't discard this article too easily. Occams Razor still makes it more likely that it's all BS, either psychosis (like the guy who genuinely thought he had invented new math because the LLM told him), bad faith PR (AI companies are squirming to IPO).
There are more than a few smelly elements. There isn't a screenshot of actual root being shown in any terminal. Just the LLM output saying "I totally achieved root, OMG, you're gonna be so famous" (paraphrasing to enhance the intellectual absence).
Not saying this doesn't work as reported. Its just... weird. If it actually achieved root, you can show that much more effectively, by showing that part. It's written like a blog post for a food recipe. I don't care about your trip to Bali that redefined your understanding of understanding.
The section where the LLM claimed to have achieved root, which the author is convinced of, because the tablet was rebooted. "It then cold-rebooted the tablet and re-rooted it in four minutes to prove the win was repeatable. Fair.". You can reboot many Linux systems from userland. It smell like psychosis to me. At least enough so that I'm happy to ignore this until someone actually does a PoC, and shows the results of it. (An LLM output saying it did "trust me", doesn't really cut it).
on "reboot and re-root" - some exploits are known to last only for a single boot. look at some console soft-mods that fly away on reboot, especially PS3, early PS4, and early Switch 1. in Android 4 days, the OS was full of them, which were seen and used as windows into "permarooting." permaroot is your normal Magisk or (now obsolete) SuperSU. so, I was not phased by that part in particular.

I wasn't particularly concerned about the author proving that it wasn't faked, and more a litmus test to suggest whether or not the author is delusional. It sure seemed like the author had asked a magic 8 ball "did I achieve root?", kept rolling until they got a "yes", posted a picture the magic 8 ball, and wrote a blog post about it.
Fable was able to get Linux booting on my M4 Pro mini. (Using Asahi as a base, not possible to upstream because they really don't like AI). Hardware support beyond USB 2.0 requires tracing macOS under the hypervisor, which Fable refuses to do and Opus isn't much good at. I'll try Sol at some point.
Great write-up. The biggest problem with GLM/Kimi is exactly this: they often miss obvious failure points. Claude/Codex tend to catch these kinds of issues pretty quickly. They’ll basically go, “Wait, step back,” rethink the problem for a while, and start questioning their underlying assumptions.
That’s why I always prompt GLM to explicitly map out and question all of its assumptions. It helps a lot when it gets “stuck” on a wrong line of reasoning.
It's about what prompted asking the question in the first place. For me, and many others, when we notice an article is difficult to read, has lots of lies and hallucinations, and other serious issues that clearly indicate it was not well thought out, edited or written, we usually ask "was it written by AI?" because that's usually the reason today.
Sucks that this has to be the case. But lots of people today are passing off >50% AI written outputs as though they are their own, without attribution. And it results in a lot more effort on the readers' part to do validation on the writing that the writer should have done.
Of course if you have no issue so be it. Several others and myself though feel like its low quality, and also deceptive not to label such outputs in this way. It is also irresponsible because it is requiring significantly more effort on the readers part to discern why things don't make sense and feel so odd and confusing. I have compared Opus 5 High and Sol High for legal advice and I consider the advice infinitely better with Sol. Far fewer hallucinations (zero, in fact, with Sol and the right prompt). The suggested text and responses also felt much less like AI. The research was more accurate with Sol. It's positively German in its attention to detail and thirst for being technically correct. Which is exactly what you want in a legal case. Opus 5 High is more of an ideas guy and is much less concerned with the letter of the law.

Apple has far more money than hobbyists to commit to AI spend (and access to source code) to find exploits and patch them. We might see new jailbreaks for older phones that have stopped receiving updates, but the bar for newer phones will probably be even higher than it is today.
There was a fairly recent development in the iOS jailbreak scene however it is only for older phones, iPhone 11 era. But you can run the latest iOS on those devices so great for people who want to reverse engineer recent app builds.
I'm curious whether OP could have achieved the same result without rooting the tablet, by running the following command in ADB shell, to remove the unwanted package:
The only difference to the command the agent executed as root is the additional "-k" flag, which instructs the package manager not to delete data/cache directories off the device (which may require root access). But the effect is the same in that the undesired package is uninstalled from the user's profile.
I'm sharing this because I've used this command to debloat Android devices I was unable to root, removing various "system packages" that would otherwise refuse uninstall attempts. It's worth a try when you don't otherwise have root access. At worst you should get an error message if it doesn't work.

Despite having extensive security credentials, OpenAI revoked my cyber verification due to "technical reasons", with no ability to reinstate it, and without clear reasoning (it's just a generic error). But if I were to judge by people on X and their discussion forums, it's essentially a non-US/EU passport ban.
Anthropic verified me with their CVP, but Opus is horrible at this, and CVP doesn't apply to Fable.

I was the only one in class to argue that if we limit our models, somebody else is going to make models which are not limited and we will lose to them in the long run on all fronts (innovation, economy, militarily).
Seemingly this is not obvious, even to people who have grown up in a free market economy and should be fully aware about how such markets operate.

So much work for to control software that we paid for, something that should have been possible from the beginning. Only free software are allowing us to fully control what we buy. Maybe AI is going to change that, that would be a nice benefit.

Even an unsophisticated attacker with a bit of money (NVIDIA DGX B200 is $500k or so - not something you buy yourself as a treat, but not expensive expensive) can put an excellent open weights model on it and have it probe and poke things day at night. Given that attacker needs to succeed once while defender has to succeed all the time... who's doing that at a large enough scale that the tech is resilient? Apple probably does, maybe some other big names like Samsung, but what about everybody else?
In fact, forget consumer hardware. My brief foray into electrical engineering and power transmission/distribution, seeing the ancient dinosaurs making decisions and generally abysmal state of IT leave me with a healthy dose of paranoia. What about other systems such as rail infrastructure? Banking system? Tons of legacy systems everywhere, whose only real defense seems to be that there's very little documentation on them.

I literally last week had GPT cheerfully come up with an exploit for an also apprently unjailbreakable kindle, without a single objection. My "workaround" was just to explain that it was for my toddler, to protect her from harmful content, and we were off to the races.
There seems to be a soft spot in GPT when you invoke children. On older versions you could get it to do pretty much anything by saying "otherwise the orphaned children will all starve".

Humans do it for free. I've got two Amazon Fire tables from a fire sale for $15 each and used a package, that exploits the SOC, from the XDA forums to install full Android on them. Every smartphone I've had before this free Oneplus Nord N30 was rooted and then and had a custom android installed, many of the root processes relied on doing exploits all the way back to my CyanogenMod days.

The point is that you can use AI to gain root on things you already own → no need to buy new things or be selective → no need to be limited by the Pine hardware selection.
except that is not true, it is an example of a successful attempt by one person on one device, it does not necessarily generalize to others device of other persons. The fact that this specific device by that manufacturer on that version is now more open is great, but maybe other versions can't be modified the same way.
So my broader point remain, if you do care for openness, even though such individual actions are positive, it is not contributing as much as economically support initiatives that already sell and support open hardware in the first place.

I've been having the time of my life as a former EE who has missed playing around with hardware. I'm quickly racking up a list of reverse engineering projects that each would have taken me months or years without LLM assistance. I'm at the point now where I'm buying things online and in 2nd hand stores just to reverse engineer them for the thrill of it.
Here's a list of some things I (well claude/codex) have played with so far:
- Using an OBDII to USB adapter and reverse engineered Ford software I now have total control over my 2005 F150 and 2012 hybrid fusion. I actually used claude to help me do a deep system scan to check the battery health on the fusion before I purchased it. I even took claude on my test drives and it monitored O2 readings, RPM, braking parameters, etc. It put together a nice HTML report with graphs and everything and my mechanic looked it over and said it caught things he would have missed!
Here's a list of the stuff I've done in just the past few months!
- A ~$100 SDR and cc1101 to reverse engineer the protocols and control remotely all the cheapo RF switches I have controlling my lights around my house.
- Using the SDR it was also able to crack the encryption scheme on a no-name brand Chinese hose timer by doing man in the middle attacks. It had me wrap the thing in foil and put it in the microwave to act as a DIY faraday cage which worked wonderfully.
- Also with the SDR it was able to create software to determine the position of all the planes in my area, decode FM radio stations, the emergency weather radio stations, decode readings from a temperature/humidity sensor that I long since lost the base station for, took a crack at the garage door opener (still WIP), and even wrote some code (untested) that supposedly will read images broadcast from a Russian satellite periodically.
- Write software to control the XY motors, IR lights, IR filters, speakers, and mics on some cheap security cameras I bought and run images through a model to detect coyotes
- Codex did some digging and found SMLIGHT SLWF-01Pro, which is pretty much an esp32 with a uart in a convenient format to fit in my Midea mini split, and wrote software to control it and pull service codes and sensor readings. If I ever have issues with the unit I should be able to pull compressor voltages, rpms, fan speeds, etc.
- Reverse engineered the protocol for a DAQ.
- Had Claude write some advanced control logic to control an electric wheelbarrow to have an entirely electrical parking brake using FOC on the brushless motors. Also it implemented something like ABS to prevent the wheels from slipping and causing washboarding on my gravel paths.
- Created software to remotely control and monitor a PocketPCR I bought years ago.
- I found an old Rhode & Schwarz signal generator and just got an RS232 to usb cable in the mail so my next project will be having codex reverse engineer that unit and running automated analysis using an oscilloscope which I also had it write software to control.
For this person, it would have been cheaper to buy another tablet. If it also saves 10 other people from buying a new tablet, that seems to have been worthwhile?

For you, yes, prompt kiddie rooting your own device is legal. In fact, it's one of the only things I actually want AI to do, because breaking DRM is a bullshit job[0] and shouldn't exist. AI deals in bullshit, so it's very poetic to use AI to destroy its own bullshit. However, from the point of view of the model provider, there are very specific legal risks to letting someone vibe code their own jailbreaks, especially if a model is already cloud-hosted and heavily regulated. Allowing hacking on your own devices could be construed as trafficking in circumvention tools, so offering that capability to randos opens Anthropic up to another billion-dollar lawsuit.
I could see this being another thing that gets put behind Trusted Access programs. Corellium was able to get away with offering cloud-hosted virtual iOS devices, using an OS they don't own, because DMCA 1201 has an explicit carveout for security research. But "make my device stop doing this thing I don't want" isn't security research, so a lot of prompt kiddie jailbreak uses become legally fraught again.

Quick context: the tablet is a 2021 Fire HD 10 that ran my Home Assistant dashboard and kept powering itself off: the logs showed Amazon's own software issuing the shutdowns, and the only permanent fix was root, which has never existed publicly for this model. Anthropic's and OpenAI's cyber safeguards wouldn't touch the project. Moonshot's Kimi K3 found an unpatched 2022 Mali CVE (CVE-2022-38181: fixed upstream in 2022, patched by Amazon in 2024, but my firmware never got it), GLM-5.2 caught two fatal bugs in the exploit, and GLM-5.3 finished it in a day. The full technical write-up with every offset and dead end is HANDOFF.md in the repo. Happy to answer questions: especially about the model-steering side, which was most of my actual contribution.
Is there another provider that can host GLM without declining you card because you tried to root our own device? I think the comparisons are obvious, its impossible to do this fully with anthropic or openai. It's very exciting what open source models make possible but also see if it gets too good, they are going to make it illegal citing natsec issues and so on.

It is possible, but is way more involved. You need to get cyber verification for either of them, and it's a little easier to get with OpenAI. Afterwards you can do such work.
It might be possible to do it fully, but you sure will lose a lot of time hand holding Claude to make it believe it's not doing anything too nefarious.

It still blocks and stops pretty much all the time because of rail guards. Specially since the release of Opus 5. I do believe when Anthropic asks during the verification process "what will you use this for", that they somehow use that info during the chat to decide whether to block or not the request.
So you might be able to do one thing in cyber, but not another one. I seem to be able to research and reverse binaries with Claude, most of the time, and if I phrase my questions in certain ways. However, any kind of code developing that could be tangentially related to malware is blocked, for me.
I am seriously considering switching to GLM or another Chinese vendor, even after being cyber verified on Claude. The routine blocks I face on the tasks that I applied to the program (reverse engineering, exploit dev) are enough to make me think its better to move ship.
It is a possibility we are aware of, also given other instances of the fight of totalitarian or perverse or counterdignified drives of all colors against tools.
But the real fundamental risk I see is that of forgetting the principles of ownership, when circumventions become more possible (like in this case). For example, if cars started behaving insanely and unofficial patches will become available, that would soften the need for a principle "my car must behave seriously: my car must not have advertising modules" etc. and "I must not need to patch my car because of the manufacturer's malicious and vile practices".

If your Kindle was plugged in the whole time (as you might with a HA dash), my guess would be the shutdowns are battery related, to avoid degradation or possible fire. Consider removing the battery if you haven't already.
